Balancing your studies, work and personal life

Advice from our Future U team to help you succeed whilst managing a busy life.

Finding the time to fit in the demands of your job alongside family commitments, while continuing to enjoy a social life, can be a challenge and leave you feeling like you never get time to yourself.

While this may cause you to think twice about studying at degree level, it’s important to remember that thousands of people step up onto this balance beam every year and achieve success.  To help you get over this hurdle and find the right balance for your life, our dedicated support service, Future U, has pulled together some top tips to help you juggle your responsibilities without compromising your goals:

Planning ahead will enable you to make the most of your time

You’ll receive all your study deadlines in advance, meaning you can plan time in for completing work or revision, so you don’t feel like you're trying to cram to much in at once.

Schedule time for study and play

Stick to specific study times throughout the week.  It's also important to be strict with the time that you set aside for your family commitments and social life.

Track your time

Keep a note of the time you’re spending on your studies.  At certain times of year, you’ll need to give extra time to your studies but if it is exceeding what your Tutor has recommended, look at how you can reign it back.

Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t get things right first time

Giving something the required focus at the right time is a necessary part of the balancing act, and providing you reward yourself for the sacrifices you’ve made when that time comes to an end, you will succeed in your efforts to fit everything in.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

At UCEN Manchester, we understand how challenging it can be to achieve the right balance for your life and make every effort to ensure our courses are as flexible as possible.

We’d encourage you to keep your family, employer and tutors in the loop about what you’ve got going on so they can understand your priorities and help you where they can.
